How to Know When To Call After A First Date

Picture this – you and a wonderful girl have just finished a wonderful first date. On this kind of evening everything has gone to plan – she laughed at all your jokes – even the bad ones – and you shared a modest, but magical, kiss goodnight. You’re left to walk home and enjoy the rest of the night in that pleasant glow you feel when you have met a special someone – until the next morning when you wake up.

As you remember the pleasantries of the previous night, even though it’s a pleasant one, a question suddenly pops up. After the first date, when exactly is it appropriate to call a girl?

For at least the last thirty years it’s a question that has been strong in the minds of anyone in a new relationship. Suddenly, you are hugely tempted by the days of your parents deciding who you marry in an arranged marriage. After all, it’s an extremely delicate balance. Making up your mind when to pick up the phone needs careful thought; you may appear over-eager if you call too early, and she may have decided you were never going to call and have moved on if you call too late…

There is no easy answer to this question. It may be generally perceived that calling too soon is wrong. However, if that were true, no man who had ever called a girl the next day after the date would be married – we all know that is not the case. Also there are lots of people who left it for weeks before calling, for lots of different reasons, yet still married the girl eventually.

So don’t judge the situation, judge the girl. Does she strike you as the type who wants you to put your cards on the table and be honest? If so, calling the next day isn’t a problem – just leave it until a normal hour. If, however, she seems to want to be wooed and dazzled by your macho side, leave it for a day or two. You should have at least a vague idea of which option is more likely to suit, now you have spent an evening in her company.

Regardless of the situation and type of girl she is, one thing you should never do is to wait for a week or more before you call her. By that point, she’ll have given up on you. Although the situation isn’t lost for ever, your best option is to wait for a maximum of four days if you decide to play it that way. If you wait any longer, you might get her answering machine – you’ll discover she’s out on another first date, but this time, with somebody else.
